Ask five agencies in India to quote for "a company website" and you will receive five very different numbers. That spread is rarely about honesty. It reflects five different interpretations of the same vague brief. One agency imagines a template with your logo on it; another imagines a custom platform integrated with your CRM, built to rank in search and to be maintained for years.
For a growing business, the website is no longer a brochure. It is the first sales meeting, the proof of credibility for investors and recruits, and often the single largest source of qualified enquiries. This guide explains what actually drives cost, how to budget for the full cost of ownership and how to compare proposals the way a procurement team would.
A website quote is the sum of decisions about design, technology, content, quality assurance and support. When the brief is vague, each agency fills the gaps with its own assumptions. The cheapest quote often assumes a pre-built theme, client-supplied content, minimal testing and no post-launch support. The most expensive may include discovery workshops, original copywriting, custom illustration, accessibility audits and a year of optimisation.
Neither is automatically right. The goal is to make the assumptions visible, so you pay for what your business actually needs.
A template is a unique layout: home, service, case study, blog article, careers, contact. Forty service pages built from one well-designed template cost far less than ten pages that each need bespoke design and development. When you request quotes, describe your content types and ask how many templates are included.
| Approach | What it means | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Theme-based | A purchased theme adjusted to your brand colours and logo | Early-stage businesses testing a market |
| Customised theme | A theme heavily modified with custom sections | Businesses with modest budgets and clear content |
| Custom design | Layouts designed from scratch around your brand, buyers and conversion goals | Companies competing on credibility, brand or premium pricing |
Custom design costs more because it starts with research: who your buyers are, what they need to believe before they contact you and what your competitors already say.
A content management system (CMS) lets your team edit the site without a developer. The question is not whether you have a CMS, but how much of the site your team can safely change: text only, or also pages, sections, case studies, team profiles, job openings and landing pages.
Each integration adds design, development and testing effort: CRM and marketing automation, booking systems, payment gateways, multilingual content, search and filtering, gated downloads, calculators, careers portals or ERP data. List the features you need at launch, and park the rest for a second phase.
Content is the most frequently underestimated line item. Who writes the copy? Who sources photography? Who migrates hundreds of existing pages and blog posts? Professionally written, keyword-researched copy is a large part of what makes a website persuade and rank.
A professional build includes technical SEO (clean markup, metadata, structured data, an XML sitemap and redirects from old URLs), performance work so pages pass Core Web Vitals on mobile, and analytics with conversion tracking. Skipping these makes the launch cheaper and the next three years more expensive.
Cross-device testing, accessibility checks, security hardening, form spam protection and privacy compliance under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act take time. They are invisible when done well and very visible when skipped.
| Engagement | Typical scope | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign landing page | One focused page, form, tracking | 1–2 weeks |
| Company website | 5–8 templates, CMS, SEO foundations, analytics | 4–8 weeks |
| Content-rich website | 10+ templates, resources, filters, multilingual, migrations | 8–14 weeks |
| E-commerce store | Catalogue, checkout, payments, shipping, GST invoicing | 6–12 weeks |
| Web platform | Accounts, dashboards, workflows, integrations | 10+ weeks, in phases |
Timelines depend heavily on how quickly content and feedback arrive. The most common cause of delay is not development; it is waiting for copy and approvals.
Launch is the beginning of a website's life, not the end. A realistic budget covers three years:
| Cost area | What it includes | How it is usually billed |
|---|---|---|
| Build | Discovery, design, development, content, QA, launch | Fixed price per phase |
| Hosting and infrastructure | Hosting, CDN, domain, email deliverability, backups | Monthly or annual |
| Maintenance and security | Updates, monitoring, fixes, uptime, SSL | Monthly retainer |
| Content and SEO | New pages, articles, case studies, optimisation | Monthly retainer or per piece |
| Improvements | New features, landing pages, conversion experiments | Hours or sprints |
A useful rule of thumb: if a proposal makes the build cheap by assuming you will handle hosting, maintenance and content yourself, make sure you actually have the people and time to do so.
Include your goals, audiences, content types, must-have features, integrations, examples you like, your timeline and a budget range. A budget range is not a weakness in negotiation; it lets vendors propose the best solution within your constraints instead of guessing.
| Criterion | Weight | What good looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Understanding of your business | 20% | Questions and insights specific to your buyers and market |
| Relevant, live work | 20% | Sites you can open and test on your own phone |
| Scope clarity | 20% | Itemised templates, features, revisions and exclusions |
| Team and process | 15% | Named roles, clear milestones, weekly demos |
| Post-launch support | 15% | Response times, maintenance plan, knowledge transfer |
| Price and payment terms | 10% | Milestone-based, transparent change-request pricing |
Copywriting, stock photography, premium plugins, hosting, email setup, content migration, multilingual translation and post-launch support are the most common exclusions. An honest proposal lists them plainly.
Invest in discovery, mobile performance, technical SEO, conversion tracking and the pages that drive enquiries: home, services, case studies and contact.
Save by launching with fewer templates, phasing in secondary features, reusing strong existing content and adding a resource library after launch.
We start with a short discovery call, then send a fixed, written proposal that lists every template, feature, integration and deliverable, plus what is excluded. You own every account and line of code from day one. Read about our website development service, see the cities we serve or request a proposal.
Because vendors make different assumptions about design, content, integrations, testing and support. Sending every vendor the same written brief and asking for an itemised scope makes quotes comparable.
A typical company website takes 4 to 8 weeks from discovery to launch. Larger content-rich websites and platforms take longer and are delivered in phases. Content readiness and feedback speed have the biggest effect on timelines.
Hosting and domain, maintenance and security updates, monitoring and backups, content and SEO, and a budget for improvements such as new landing pages and features.
A freelancer can suit a small, well-defined project. An agency is usually the safer choice when you need design, development, content, SEO and long-term support from one accountable team.
Not if it is planned properly. Keep valuable URLs where possible, set up 301 redirects for every changed URL, preserve metadata and content that ranks, and monitor Search Console closely after launch.
A slow website never looks broken. It just loses people, one second at a time. A guide to measuring, diagnosing and fixing speed for good.
