A slow website does not show an error message. It simply loses people. A potential client taps your link from Google, waits, sees a blank screen or a page that jumps around, and returns to the results to try the next company. That visitor never appears in your enquiry inbox, so the cost remains invisible.
In India the effect is amplified. Most visitors browse on mid-range Android phones over mobile networks whose speed varies from moment to moment. A website that feels instant on office broadband and a laptop can feel sluggish on a phone in a moving car. For businesses that compete on credibility, a slow site quietly signals the opposite of what you want to convey.
Every additional moment of waiting gives a visitor a reason to leave, particularly on mobile, where people are often comparing several providers at once. Faster pages keep more visitors long enough to read your proposition, see your proof and get in touch.
Google uses Core Web Vitals as part of its page experience signals. Speed will not lift a weak page above a strong one, but between comparable pages it can be the deciding factor. Faster sites are also crawled more efficiently, which matters for sites with many service, location or product pages.
For Google Ads, landing page experience contributes to Quality Score, which influences what you pay per click. Every visitor who abandons before the page loads is a click you paid for and lost.
| Metric | What it measures | Good | Needs improvement | Poor |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) | When the main content becomes visible | 2.5 s or less | 2.5–4 s | Over 4 s |
| Interaction to Next Paint (INP) | How quickly the page responds to taps and clicks | 200 ms or less | 200–500 ms | Over 500 ms |
| Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) | How much the layout moves unexpectedly | 0.1 or less | 0.1–0.25 | Over 0.25 |
Google assesses these at the 75th percentile of real visits, so a page passes only if most visitors, including those on slower phones, have a good experience.
Field data comes from real Chrome users and appears in PageSpeed Insights (for pages with enough traffic) and in the Core Web Vitals report in Google Search Console. It is what Google uses.
Lab data comes from a simulated test, such as the Lighthouse score in PageSpeed Insights. It is invaluable for diagnosing problems and testing fixes, but a single lab score is not the same as passing Core Web Vitals.
Use field data to decide which pages need attention and lab data to understand why.
| Root cause | Symptoms | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Oversized images | Slow LCP, heavy pages | Resize to display size, use WebP or AVIF, compress, lazy-load below the fold |
| Render-blocking CSS and fonts | Blank screen for the first seconds | Inline critical CSS, load only the font weights you use, use font-display swap |
| Excess JavaScript | Poor INP, sluggish taps | Remove unused libraries, defer non-essential scripts, split code by page |
| Third-party scripts | Unpredictable slowdowns | Audit chat widgets, trackers and embeds; load them after interaction where possible |
| Slow hosting | High time to first byte | Modern hosting with a CDN and caching close to Indian users |
| Missing dimensions | High CLS | Set width and height on images and embeds; reserve space for banners |
| Heavy video and maps | Slow load, poor INP | Use lightweight previews that load the full embed on click |
Websites get slower over time as new plugins, scripts, campaigns and images are added. Three habits keep them fast:
At NexusBee, every website we build starts with a performance budget, and our SEO and performance service diagnoses and fixes slow sites built elsewhere. For the wider picture, read our SEO checklist for Indian businesses, or request a free speed and SEO audit.
Aim for the main content to appear within 2.5 seconds for most mobile visitors (an LCP of 2.5 seconds or less), with interactions responding within 200 milliseconds and minimal layout movement.
Yes. Core Web Vitals are part of Google's page experience signals, and faster pages are crawled more efficiently. Speed will not compensate for weak content, but it can decide between comparable pages.
Lab tests vary with network and server conditions. Focus on trends and on field data from real users rather than individual lab scores.
Phones have less processing power and often use slower, less stable networks. Images and JavaScript that a laptop handles easily can take several seconds on a mid-range phone.
Monthly, and after every significant release, campaign launch or new third-party script.
